Centro Cardiologico Monzino
Founded in 1981 by Italo Monzino and Professor Cesare Bartorelli of the University of Milan. It is the first Scientific Institute for Research and Treatment in Europe focused exclusively on cardiovascular disease and the biggest in Italy, accredited by the National Health Service with a specialized Emergency Unit open 24/7, is the main branch of the University of Milan for cardiovascular diseases activities.
Interventional Cardiology Area
The Monzino’s cardiac catheterization laboratories are equipped with the most advanced and innovative tools to offer a full range of state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
Together with traditional and quantitative angiography, additional invasive diagnostic and imaging modalities such as intravascular ultrasound, virtual histology, optical coherence tomography and fractional flow reserve allow more precise and accurate evaluation of coronary lesions to be treated and assessment of post-procedural results. Furthermore, a dedicated cardiovascular Imaging Department allow a multimodal diagnostic integration for a more precise selection of the best treatment for each patient.
In this Area also operates a skilled anaesthetists team, to guarantee an adequate hemodynamic condition and sedation.
Electrophysiology Area
In this Area almost every type of arrhythmia is managed: from atrial fibrillation to ventricular tachycardias.
Treatment consists mostly in radiofrequency catheter ablation, often guided by 3D reconstruction and substrate mapping.
The Area also performs implantation of permanent pacemakers, single and dual-chamber devices, and of a new miniaturized Micra Transcatheter Pacing System, the world’s smallest pacemaker delivered percutaneously via a minimally invasive approach, with the Interventional Area support.
The Area is also equipped to perform transcatheter closure of the left atrial appendage in order to reduce the cardio-embolic risk, and to perform endomyocardial biopsies to improve diagnostic accuracy and prognostic correlations in case of cardiomyopathy, myocarditis or cardiac tumors.
Cardiac and vascular surgery
Monzino’s surgery activities involve all fields of adult cardiac and vascular surgery, performing a very high volume of surgical procedures, – from mini-invasive valve implants to coronary bypass surgery, from endovascular or open surgery of aorta aneurysms to carotid arteriectomy and peripheral vascular surgery.
More recently, the Area started treating non-respondent atrial fibrillations and ventricular tachycardia due to ischemic disease, dilatative cardiomyopathy or ventricular tumour. The Area also performs Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implantation, as destination therapy or bridge to transplant.
A new multifunctional operating room combining endovascular, cardiac catheterization, cardiac, surgical and radiological capabilities, allows the cardio-team to perform the treatment of the most complex cardiac and vascular conditions.
